Farm information

The farm

Layer Marney is a farm at a startling historical Tudor location that’s just 20 minutes’ drive from the acclaimed Mersea Island. Come and meet Peggy and Darcy the beautiful black horses, learn about the rare goat-like Castle Milk Moorit sheep bred here, and check out the other farm animals. In spring you can enjoy bottle-feeding the lambs. There’s the spider’s web climbing frame behind the barn and more children’s play equipment by the Poultry Palace where the chickens live. Layer Marney Tower is the tallest Tudor gatehouse in England, and was built by Lord Marney, longtime friend of Henry VIII. It is barely an hour from Greater London, as seen recently on Channel 4’s Four in a Bed TV series, in which the owners of the Tower were joint winners, showcasing both the glamping opportunities and the tower itself. Layer Marney also has its own activity program which visitors are perfectly placed to join.

The tents nestle in a beautiful spot in the birch, ash and alder trees that you’ll share with pheasants, woodpeckers, muntjac deer and owls, with some tents facing fields that are home to red deer. All tents come with a private shower and some have outdoor hot tubs, which can be booked as an extra, for a truly indulgent way to get back to nature. Each tent also has it’s own fire pit. Rising above it all, the tower’s brickwork and terracotta glows in sunshine as it must have done in Henry VIII’s time, and from the top of the tower there are amazing sea views.

Activities on the farm

Layer Marney has quite a story, and the farm tour covers the farm, its colourful animals and the thrills and spills of the history of the house. Instead of the “regular Farm Tour” guests at Layer Marney have free access to the tower when it is open. You can take off on rented bikes into the country you’ve seen from up high and of which Layer Marney has been a fixture of for so long. And how about a tractor ride? This popular activity is available in July and August from Monday to Thursday every week. After a long day exploring, the honesty shop will have the stock to sustain you. Stone-oven baked pizzas with toppings chosen and laid on in what to your kids is evenly, will also hit the spot. Or how about booking the stew ingredients that you will make yourself over the open fire?! For communal eating there’s the impressive Deer Barn, which means Layer Marney is perfect for large group holidays. Furthermore, Layer Marney Tower is one of the most romantic places in England and therefore a popular wedding venue. Why not combine your wedding with a glamping honeymoon?

Explore the area

Although a lot of our visitors just enjoy the opportunity to switch off and enjoy the slow life, rarely leaving their encampment, Layer Marney Tower is well placed to explore the surrounding area.  For bird watching Aberton Reservoir, one of Europe’s top wetland sites, is a ten-minute drive away. Equally close is Colchester Zoo, recently voted one of the top two zoos in the country. Colchester Castle, the largest Norman Keep in Europe, built on the site of a Roman Temple when Colchester was the Roman capital of England, is well worth a visit, as it’s fabulous for both adults and children.  Just up the A12 explore Constable Country or for a perfect day out at the seaside cross the causeway to Mersea Island and enjoy the beach, try your hand at crabbing then have a lunch of fresh fish at the Company Shed.  Try Clacton for the thrills of fairground rides, or Frinton for the genteel Edwardian elegance of a seaside town.

We can assure you of a glamping holiday to remember.
